While the player refused to comment, the team did not outright deny the claims. "If it'll help this team, we'll make a move," said one team official. |  | Saturday, September 13th, 1980: Blizzard Nieman Fans 16 Ironhorse Today at Rich Field Chad Nieman was on target and in command. The Orchard Park hurler racked up 16 strikeouts in a 3-0 triumph over Chessie. Nieman had no walks and gave up 4 hits in knocking off the Ironhorse.
This season Nieman has a 19-7 mark in 32 starts with a 1.95 ERA. He has given up 163 hits in 244.1 innings, struck out 331 and issued 26 walks. He had the perfect delivery. The good fastball. The nasty curve. The batters mumbling and muttering when they swung and missed. And when he needed a strikeout, he got it. In an unforgettable performance the 25-year-old Carrasco fanned 15 strikeouts Empire and sparked the Chessie Ironhorse to a 4-1 victory over New York.
His catcher commented, "I don't think I have seen him throw better. His location and command were really something."
In addition to his 15 strikeouts, Johnson allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in a superlative outing.
His manager added, "It's a manager's day off when you get pitching like that."
The New York skipper had no comment that was printable in the newspaper.
