Thursday, September 25th, 1980: Orchard Park Beats Latrobe 7-2, Valdéz Ks 16
It was a very special game for Ángel Valdéz today at Rich Field in Orchard Park. He had the perfect delivery. The good fastball. The nasty curve. The batters mumbling and muttering when they swung and missed. And when he needed a strikeout, he got it. In an unforgettable performance the 25-year-old Valdéz fanned 16 strikeouts Lightning and sparked the Orchard Park Blizzard to a 7-2 victory over Latrobe.

His catcher commented, "I don't think I have seen him throw better. His location and command were really something."

In addition to his 16 strikeouts, Johnson allowed 4 hits and 2 walks in a superlative outing.

His manager added, "It's a manager's day off when you get pitching like that."

The Latrobe skipper had no comment that was printable in the newspaper.

Over the season Valdéz has thrown 252.2 innings and dished out 290 strikeouts with a 19-6 mark and a 2.49 ERA.
Wednesday, September 24th, 1980: Nieman Holds Lightning Scoreless
It was a dismal game for the Lightning with Chad Nieman on the hill. The Orchard Park starter was in top form and made it a long day for Latrobe with a 3-0 shutout. He surrendered a total of 4 hits and piled up 11 strikeouts to pick up the win in a route-going effort.

In 1980 Nieman has fashioned a 21-7 mark, 1.82 ERA and pitched 261.2 innings. Opposing clubs are batting .183 against him and he has logged 353 strikeouts.
Thursday, September 18th, 1980: 5-6 Day for Breton
5 hits in a game doesn't happen every day. Latrobe's Alfonso Breton had a very special day against the Aztecs when everything came together for him and he did just that -- collected 5 hits in 6 at-bats -- and led the Latrobe Lightning to a 13-3 win at 33 Field.

"I'm just out there to try and help the team win," Breton said after the game, "I had some real good at-bats today. I made good, solid contact and luckily no one caught 'em."

A. Breton singled in the 1st, hit a two-run double in the 2nd, hit an RBI single in the 3rd, struck out in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off J. Richards in the 7th and hit a solo-shot off S. Ramírez in the 9th.

In his season totals Breton has 15 home runs and a .244 batting average.
