| Breaking News | | Wednesday, September 24th, 1980: Falls Church No Match for Facer In an impressive mound performance, Justin Facer of the South Beach Sunburn checked the Falls Church Frenzy on a 5-hitter and held them scoreless.
"He was getting ahead of us and keeping the ball off the plate," said the Falls Church manager. "Facer kept us confused the whole game."
The South Beach hurler rang up 10 strikeouts and issued 1 walk in his 4-0 shutout victory.
In 33 starts this season Facer has registered a 21-9 record and a 2.47 ERA. | | Saturday, September 20th, 1980: Un-four-gettable: Troiano Hits for Cycle South Beach's Dallas Troiano accomplished what few others have been able to do -- he hit for the cycle. In baseball, a player hits for the cycle when he hits a single, a double, a triple and a home run in the same game, though not necessarily in that order. Collecting the hits in that order is known as a "natural cycle."
For the day he finished 4-5 with 1 RBI and 3 runs scored and helped his Sunburn knock off the Homer Yetis 9-1 at Bayfront Park. In the postgame press conference he said, "I didn't even know I had hit for the cycle until after the game."
D. Troiano singled in the 2nd, tripled in the 3rd, grounded out in the 5th, hit a solo-shot off T. Reese in the 7th and doubled in the 8th.
Currently Troiano has 48 home runs and a .301 batting average. | | Thursday, September 4th, 1980: Star SP Signs Pact with Sunburn Team officials triumphantly announced that the Sunburn and superstar starting pitcher William Sommers have closed a deal that keeps the 28-year-old in a South Beach uniform for another 3 years.
Sommers will earn $29,780,000 as part of the settlement.
Sommers has made 28 starts this season, posting 18 wins and 5 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .218 against him and he has 171 strikeouts in 219.1 innings with a 2.67 ERA. | | | | Team Information | | Record overall | 102-60, .630 PCT | | Position in Division | 1st, - GB | | Record at home | 46-35, .568 PCT | | Record on the road | 56-25, .691 PCT | | Record in X-inning games | 7-6, .538 PCT | | Record in one-run games | 22-19, .537 PCT | | Record versus LHP | 37-16, .698 PCT | | Record versus RHP | 65-44, .596 PCT | | Record last 10 games | 9-1, .900 PCT | | Record in April | 14-14, .500 PCT | | Record in May | 14-15, .483 PCT | | Record in June | 20-5, .800 PCT | | Record in July | 16-13, .552 PCT | | Record in August | 19-9, .679 PCT | | Record in September | 19-4, .826 PCT |
