    Draft Date

Any reason not to hold the draft when MLB does? It's usually early June.

(You may notice a message about the draft pool. That's because the game is currently set to June for the draft.)

    Re: Draft Date

what would determine the draft order since we already drafted once off of last years results?

OOO OOO I'd like the draft to use the standings as they are currently!

What, conflict of interest? Me?  Noooooo.

    Re: Draft Date

Oh right, draft order...man, I guess we can never change that date then can we?

No real reason to, it was just the default date in game I think and is the same as MLB.

    Re: Draft Date

I'd imagine it would use the previous year's standings as the draft order.  And i thought we werent' going to do another amateur draft this season since we did it in 6.5.

    Re: Draft Date

My big concern would be with stopping in the middle of the season to do it.  The nice thing about it being in the offseason is that we have some necessary downtime there with free agency anyways.  I suppose we could start drafting while keeping the sims coming, but I'm not sure there's any real advantage to doing it that way.

That said, I DO like getting the see the draft pool earlier than the actual draft.  Although I haven't played single-player enough to know how much that list is going to change over the course of the year (hopefully not a trivial amount), I always thought it was silly that we had to trade completely blindly when it came to draft picks.

This isn't an issue since we'd still run the draft "offline", so it wouldn't hold anything up. I can only assume that 2007 works like 6.5 in that the game doesn't hold things up, you can do it when you want to. So in 6.5 it still had a date when it starts, but you can do other things (FA) and perform the actual picks when you want to.

Yeah, this would be nice, to see the pool so you have an idea of what you can actually get in a trade.

The biggest issue we face is that we did already perform the draft in 6.5 in the offseason, so unless we have another draft this year, it'll be hard to change the schedule from the offseason.

One option if we really want to change the draft date is to hold a random draft order draft this June. Being as most 1st round draft picks do not develop into super stars (as in RL), I don't think this would throw things off. It would just be a one time extra lottery draft.

Of course we can just keep the draft in the offseason and that's that. (I'll have to ensure that you CAN change the draft date once the season starts. I think that's not a problem.

    Re: Draft Date

I'd like to see the draft happen in June league time and even this season.  The reasons are:

    1. I'd like to split up the draft and FA, we can have the draft and still run the season as normal.  You can base the order by the previous seasons won/loss record.

    2. Eventhough we did have a sterioded (is that a word?) draft class a short while ago I'd still like to see a little more talent in the league.  I don't want an all-star league though.

    Re: Draft Date

If we did the June draft this year, I don't think we should base the order on the previous year's won/loss record.  We already had a draft based on those standings.  While it would certainly benefit Texas to have another first overall selection, they should have to earn that!  ;-)  (Though, they are well on their way, especially with losing their young, up-and-coming cleanup hitter for the season because he can't round the bases without tripping over one...)

Seriously though, we should consider some other method for determining draft order if we are to do the June draft this year.  Either a random order, as was suggested earlier, or perhaps something involving the current standings.  If we wanted to get sophisticated, we could do some sort of weighted lottery thing to determine draft order (maybe based on current standings).  That's more work though, so I'd be fine with random as well.

Zayx is right in that it certainly wouldn't hurt to throw in an extra draft.  Even with the "banner crop" of draftees two seasons ago, looking through the league there aren't a ton of really strong farm systems.  It seems like there are even fewer good prospects now in OOTP2007, though I'm sure the ratings system has something to do with that.  The upcoming draft class is pretty average on talent, too, so I don't think it will turn BBL into an all-star league.  And I do like splitting up the draft and FA.  As long as the draft doesn't slow down the progress of the season, I think it will help to make the off-season easier to manage.  Our off-seasons sometimes seem to drag on a bit after the first few days...

I guess we could skip this year's draft all together since we already did one in the off-season... but then you ruin some kid's dream of being drafted!  Stick out tongue

my $.03 (worth more than Caelon, see!!!)  *grin*

I dont' really see why we should do another amateur draft this year.  We already had one for this season, based on record from last season, like normal.

I say we skip this year's draft, and then draft in June going forward next year, and base it on the previous year's record, like we always do.

    Re: Draft Date

I'm going to have to look in the game setup but it's possible that we can't disable this years draft now that the season has started, but I can probably set the date to after the season ends.

Then we could hold the draft a little earlier than usual. THEN I could change the date to be .... well damn, ok, here's the only way to skip this year's draft:

Change the date to after the season ends.

Assuming it lets us, turn off the draft. Advance to next season with no draft, and before the season starts turn the draft back on with a date of June 6th or so.

We could do that, or we could just hold another one...this draft class isn't too terribly deep. I dunno, I think a random order draft in June might be fun.

Course I have another idea I've been batting around in my head for "fun" factor as well. This is all off the top of my head and not thought out at all, but here goes:

What if each owner could create a player with some contraints in place (so they wouldn't be insanely good), but this player could be whoever the owner wanted him to be. A created player's career would have to be a certain length and that player would have to be in that organization their whole career.

We could put in some rules to allow upgrading that character each year...I have no idea how I'd implement this, but it seems like it'd be really fun to actually have a custom created player (in your image perhaps...), who you would be attached to and follow throughout his career...sort of a mini-game within the game.

    Just a thought.

    Re: Draft Date

ooh, i like the sound of that last idea Cool
for e.g. having say 22 points avilable to spread out over Stuff, Control and Movement for a Pitcher?

As for the draft, i'd say have it june and use the current standings for the draft order.
lets face it, these draft picks aren't exactly going to stroll into our lineups straight away

    Re: Draft Date

if it's that much of a pain to turn it off, then by all means, lets have a second amateur draft in june *grin*  My reasons for not holding it weren't that strong.
